Wellington is a city well known for its fantastic coffee and its creative, forward thinking outlook on life. Wellington is well respected as the first city to create a free public WiFi space in 2010. Yesterday iconic Wellington café, Midnight Espresso announced its plans to block all radio frequencies within the shop space. Owner Audrey Hince explained, “the Nyx Network was fantastic as an idea, but since it became mainstream people seem to have lost the ability to be humans. I see people every day who avoid physical communication because digital [communication] is so much more efficient. Who wants to have a coffee with someone while they’re sitting there, communicating with someone on the other side of town?”.

Mrs Hince also hinted this is a response to the recent Privacy Bill amendment.

Wellington Mayor Liam Boulden responded by saying “this is backwards thinking. This isn’t 1990; we need to embrace technology especially the Nyx Network in order to stay ahead of the game. Internationally Wellington’s reputation in forward thinking is fantastic; we are known for our creative minds and technological milestones”.

A spokesperson for Wellington Water Co-operative refused to comment.

Embracing the weather with SecEm

Wellington is famous for its compactness, its sensory qualities and most importantly, its film industry. Unfortunately also for its sadistic southerlies and remorseless rain. Luckily Wellington based chemical research lab SecEm has developed a chemical that challenges Wellington’s extremes.

Lead engineer Liam Rouetly says the chemical is completely revolutionary and could potentially have thousands of applications outside of its own intended use. The chemical known currently as polymer 2060 has amazing absorbent properties and is originally intended as what Rouetly describes simply as a “skin umbrella”.

“Polymer 2060 is fantastic for its intended use and other potential usages. The polymer is genetically designed to absorb water and harden, while continuing to absorb water.” Rouetly explains. “In addition to absorbing and holding water, as 2060 hardens it gains the ability to reflect and absorb potential RF emissions. Protecting any surface from becoming wet, or being penetrated by radio waves. We are currently working on evolving the polymer to insulate, which would have tremendous potential for the drastically improving the quality of homes”.

“Wellington weather is extreme,” Rouetly admits “its amazing in summer and horrific in winter. Have you ever walked down Featherston St on a wet, windy day and observed all the dead umbrellas littered in bins and gutters? That was our motivation to develop 2060, we wanted to come up with a solution where Wellingtonian’s would never need an umbrella again”.

Routely describes Polymer 2060 as “breathtaking”. Simply one drop of 2060 in liquid form can absorb enough water to create a shell for the entire upper body of a average sized male.

Liam Rouetly and Greg Barnett founded SecEm in 2038. Both Barnett and Rouetly graduated from Victoria University with Masters in Biochemical Product Engineering in 2033. After travelling together, they decided to settle in Wellington. “We love Wellington, there is just something about this place. We both wanted to give something back to our home”.

Wellington’s international reputation has grown significantly since gaining the “Sensory City of the Year” title. However the development of Polymer 2060 has rocketed Wellingtons reputation into space; rumors have surfaced that NASA had expressed interest in Polymer 2060.

“We are very excited about the potential of Polymer 2060. There are a lot of important people excited about Polymer 2060” SecEm’s spokesperson announced.

Liam Rouetly explained that there is a large amount of secrecy surrounding the polymer. “Everything is happening fast, we are getting hundreds of holographic calls weekly its really great”.

With the recent introduction of the Nyx Network, society has been concerned with the long-term effects of consuming the technologically enhanced Nyx proteins.

Recently introduced by Wellington Water Co-Operative, The Nyx Network will hopefully enhance the lives of Wellingtonians by creating a more fluid connection between our current digital and virtual lifestyles. The network functions by using existing underground water networks in addition with artificially enhanced consumable proteins.

Since this introduction, fears have been growing regarding the alleged grave ramifications connected with the consumption of the proteins.

A recent study that investigated the resulting effects from constantly connecting and disconnecting to the Nyx Network has yielded haunting results. The study undertaken at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has revealed grave ramifications including skin discolouration, rash like effects, skin pigmentation and infection of the sweat glands.

Dr John Goldstein led the study, where the resulting effects were sampled on 122 subjects over a two-year time frame.

“The effects are very grave indeed,” Dr John Goldstein explains.

“The majority of the subjects, eighty eight of them, remain symptomless. However the remaining minority showed signs of skin discolouration, rash like symptoms, skin pigmentation and infection of the sweat glands.”

Seven subjects showed signs of inflamed and infected sweat glands, while three developed black skin pigmentation.

Dr Goldstein states that the harsh effects could be the results of various lifestyle factors.

“Diet and exercise play important roles in the circulatory system, we must remember that the proteins we induce in order to connect to the network, circulate through our bodies and into our brains. A large number of factors affect the performance of these proteins, factors such as resting heart-rate, the viscosity of the subjects blood, whether they smoke cigarettes or not. All of these play a detrimental role in determining the resulting effects from inducing the proteins” Goldstein explains.

While these symptoms are yet to prove life threatening, Goldstein highlights the risks involved with constant connection and disconnection of the network.

“While the effects of constantly logging off are minor and vary between people and ethnicities, we should still take caution while we log on and off from the network.” Goldstein warned.

“Rather than logging on and off as we use the network, maintaining a constant connection is the safest option until we discover a safer alternative of disconnection from the network.”

Emerging Kiwi Fashion Artist Makes Headway.

Electrifying and provocative are two words that easily describe the emotion of fashion designer N White’s latest headwear range - interestingly titled Chengdu. Bold angles, conflicting materials and contrasting colours were seamlessly entwined to create grand head accessories that exude power and grace.

The collection by the 28-year-old Wellington based designer has raised eyebrows locally. The provocative collection stabs a knife through the heart of local politicians who recently proposed the Privacy Bill 2040 amendment that essentially abolished any form of electronic privacy. N White publically spoke out against the amendment stating the changes were “morbidly invasive… any form of personal privacy we had left, has now been abolished”.

Designing the collection, N White collaborated with Auckland based Biologist Mark Schelwitz who developed the water-absorbing polymer fabric N White utilized in creating the pieces. During the interview N White discussed the importance of the fabric and its use in the headpieces. “The fabric absorbs water and retains the water for an extended period of time, water amazingly is a natural material that absorbs radio waves. We also used other materials such as hydrogel and water-based polymer 2060, combining water with materials that hold special reflective properties that when structured together, can shield the brain from external penetration”.

The headpieces surround the front-left lobe, containing the human antennae. Once wet - radio waves are reflected and absorbed logging you off from The Network and protecting you’re personal privacy from unwanted surveillance.

“My aesthetic has always been dark and provocative, but never political. I felt so moved to take action against this bill, I feel as a society we are so immersed in technology and electronic communication that we will eventually lose the ability to have an oral discussion” N White explains.

“Initially I thought of a creating a garment made from a metal based mesh, looking something like a stealth aircraft”.

Currently the headpieces are in what is described as “beta stage”. So far three garments have been created, each one an evolution of the other. The final version is almost fully functional and the focus now is on improving the current design.

“I want to explore other avenues for achieving the same goal, but currently the focus is on finishing the headwear range” N White explains.

N White pokes fun at Wellington weather “The focus of the headpieces was not just the privacy issue, the main underlying problem was to try to get people to connect on a physical level once again. Wellington was a great example because of the terrible weather! People can put on the headpieces and run outside, embrace the wind and rain, shut off from The Network and learn to love everything that is natural again”.

Early stage development of outdoor shelter from both the natural and the digital. Based around the Wellington "Bee-Hive", the shelter is built in several layers, each layer captures and stores rain water, building up almost a second skin of water. Providing the ultimate protection.

Inside the buildings are libraries and large seating arrangements. During bad weather people can come and sit down, smell the pages of books, hear the soft talking of people behind them and embrace a feeling of community once again.

Community Protection

My project is developing from personal protection (head pieces) and moving to a more community based protection. Working on mockups of the design in Maya as well as sketches.

The concept is based still around water and its radio wave absorption properties. Although, research has found a water based polymer coating is being developed by a company called EmSec which acts as a reflecting surface for radio-waves in the Wi-Fi radio wave length. Harnessing both natural and artificial to fully secure our privacy and regain intimate physical connections.

When bad weather strikes, people are encouraged to embrace the weather, in order to become instinctive humans once again.

Long has privacy been a frontline issue for society, the updated Privacy Act of 2022 almost abolished any form of electronic privacy; the human body seemed to be under constant surveillance for our protection. An upcoming Wellington techno-fashion designer "N.B" has harnessed the power of water-absorbing materials and radio-wave repelling materials to create a range of fashionable headpieces that not only looking stunning, but help to log you off The Network.

The new ranges of headpieces are designed to cover the human antennae located in the left-front lobe, reflecting and absorbing incoming radio waves. The headpieces are most effective when wet – as water absorbs radio waves. Numerous panels are covered in a water-absorbing fabric, and layered in hydrogel; retaining water and keeping the head dry in wet weather.

In a recent interview, “N.B” told reporters he named the collection “Chengdu” and the collections aesthetic is based upon the Chinese Chengdu J-20 stealth fighter jet released in 2019.

“N.B” will be showcasing his “Chengdu” line Wednesday June 27^th at the Auckland Hilton Hotel.

Aesthetic experiments.

A few experiments I did to find an aesthetic style for the prototypes for my headpieces.

Anti-Radiowaves

After doing extensive research on methods of absorbing and reflecting radio waves I have begun a headpiece that will reflect and absorb radio waves. My theory being that in 2040 cellphones will be a part of the person, rather than an extension and in someway attached to the brain. So far its simply a wireframe, but it will be covered in materials that absorb or reflect radio waves. I will be using broken mirror shards and a material that will hold and absorb water - water does a very good job of absorbing radio waves.

Researching methods of logging off.

It may sound strange, but it works because it rallies the body’s
defenses, according to Jamey Wallace, ND, clinic medical director at Bastyr Center for Natural
Health. And the best part about it is that it uses the healing power of nature
and doesn’t cost
anything.

The treatment is known as a "heating compress,” meaning that it's up to the
body to heat the cold, wet socks, says Dr. Wallace. “The body reacts to the cold
socks by increasing blood circulation, which also stimulates the immune system.
You have to ‘rev up’ the immune system, so it’s ready for battle against the
affliction or condition.”

This treatment acts to reflexively increase the circulation and
decrease congestion in the upper respiratory passages, head and throat. It also
has a sedating action, and many patients report that they sleep much better
during the treatment. The treatment is also effective for pain relief and
increases the healing response during acute infections.

The wet sock treatment is used in conjunction with other modalities to
treat inflammation, infection or soreness of the throat, headaches, migraines,
nasal congestion, upper respiratory infections, coughs, bronchitis and sinus
infections.

It’s best to start the wet sock treatment on first day of an illness,
ideally repeating it for three nights in a row. People with chronic conditions
or a compromised immunity should consult with a doctor before starting the wet
sock treatment. Dr. Wallace also points out, “The wet sock treatment is only one
component of an integrated treatment plan that includes hydration, proper
nutrition and immunity-boosting supplements.”

After reading this Im considering designing a garment that will produce the same effect as what the "wet sock" does to purge the body of the tardigrades and "log off".
