WEATHER WISE

Wellingtons weather wise uniforms are changing.

Can you spot the weather wise wardens?

Wellingtons WeatherWise staff are actively teetering on the leading edge of weather disputes and mediation in the community. WeatherWise staff uniforms are changing due to confusion and also to embrace the weather rather than to shy away from it.

‘Weather Wise’ formally set up by the late Jim hickey is a wellington city council initative which focuses on keeping the general public up to date with the weather wars and what week’s weather consensus status is. They are a positive bunch of workers who are very approachable and ready to inform the public with up-to date weather reports.

They are based in Wellington, mostly found on foot around the busy centres of Cuba mall, Lambton Quay and of course Courtney place on a Saturday night warning partygoers of the weather dangers for the night.

The call for a new uniform came after an issue was raised regarding confusion with the councils “by foot services” walkwise , parkwise, and weatherwise kept getting mixed up by the general public, one weather wise employee states
“people keep harassing me about parking fines when im here to inform about the weather” .

The problem of confusion needed to be addressed. We resolved the problem with new uniforms designed by jono Watkins a leading Industrial fashion designer.
Jono Watkins inspiration behind the garment comes from the heart of Wellingtons weather. He embraces the weather rather than shying away from it, using the elements of wild Wellington for inspiration. We ask how?
Jonos technical run-down

“Well im Using technologically advanced fabrics from the 2040 couture textile collection boasting properties of structural colour, (Light refracting , never to fade) Hydro phallic (stores the water that falls on it) active carbon based (never needs washing, no smells) kinetic (stores energy from the wind and movement) chemically heated (heats up on those cold wellington mornings ). As the Wellington Wise staff are actively involved in the weather of wellington, I needed to embrace these elements. Also this is shown in the design of the garment, with large arm vents it allows the Weatherwise staff to instantly control temperature , wind and water catchment “.

This new uniform will bring a breath of fresh air to the wardens (excuse the pun).
We thank the general public for getting involved in the Wellington weather wise campaign, especially all the young kids.

Keep an eye out for WeatherWise staff in your area.

Final form and photos

The garment gathers water really well and looks great the idea of a flat plane wrapping around a 3d form has worked well.
The sleeves are open but still attached allowing the user to adjust the temperature and exposure . When arms are close to the body the sleeve/vents are closed. When arms are away from the body the vents are open exposing the body.

First generation model

This model is a test piece, I had it printed without the elliptical extrusions and applied flocking to the surface to give a furry texture and represent the properties of Kinetic Hair (captures and stores kinetic energy )

Solidworks model

This is the model made in solidworks which uses clips to attach the sides together and the elliptical extrusions to collect water

CREATION

First thoughts on how to create a garment in solidworks.

Garments are woven, sewn . I liked the idea of chainmaile which has been modified, I tried a few different models but then moved on.
Then This Idea was spawned.

Cost is a big issue on doing a print this big, even at scale so the idea of a flat print was attractive and had some cool properties like pushing the material , flexing it. The idea of flat_pack_clothing . Where the clothing is buttoned together to shape its form but when un buttoned is a single flat sheet of fabric.

Properties of the fabric

THE 2040 COUTURE TEXTILE COLLECTION SHOWCASES THE BEST OF THE BEST IN THE TEXTILE WORLD. GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FABRICS ARE NOW A REALITY AND ARE READY TO BE USED TO BRING YOUR FASHION CREATIONS TO LIFE. THE TEXTILES WORK SEAMLESSLY TOGETHER BREATHING A NEW TECHNOLOGICAL ERA TO TEXTILES.

StructuraCol USES AMBIENT LIGHT TO CREATE THE COLOUR OF THE FABRIC, MEANING NEVER TO FADE.
StructraCol uses structural colour like that found on the wings of morpho butterflies. The Idea behind this fabric is that the structure of the cells are made in such a way that when ambient light hits the fabric it will reflect only one of the colours in the light spectrum and absorb the others. Therefore it will shine brighter on a sunny day and never fade.

HydrOuterwear COLLECTS AND STORES RAINWATER FOR LATER USE IN OUR HeataChem TEXTILE.
HydrOuterwear uses the same principle as a Namib Desert beetle that collects due from the fog on its wings and filters it down to its mouth. These wings are a hydrophobic surface.
In hydrOuterwear there will be Hydrophilic (water loving) cells amongst the hydrophobic surface to store the water. Later this stored water can be used for drinking if in extreme conditions and also used to create the chemical reaction with calcium chloride in our HeataChem Textile.

HeataChem CAN HEAT UP TO 90DEGREES CELCIUS OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
HeataChem uses the same principles as a hot cold heat pack, but we have incorporated it into a material which can be activated by water, once the material has dried out again it restores its state and is ready to be used as a heating textile again.

KineticHair CAPTURES THE WINDS ENERGY AND STORES IT IN ITS BIOMETRIC FOLICLES.
KineticHair can capture the winds energy in its genetically engineered hair follicles. Each hair is its own battery cell and can hold up to 0.005v and 0.001ma, when hair cells are linked together 500mm x 500mm square of KineticHair can charge a cell phone or other handheld device. At full charge.

StankStop USES THE POWER OF CHARCOAL TO SOAK UP ANY SMELLS AND NEVER NEEDS WASHING.
Stank stop is made from Active carbon; Active carbon is a naturally occurring substance which can soak up body smells and doesn’t need washing. It is antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal.

Taking an idea to bigger and better things

The idea of this jacket, was a good one, and needs to be justified.

The ''2040 Couture textile collection'' looked like everyday fabrics (because they were) but had very interesting properties.

What I propose is to create a garment CAD model. The ability to show detail in a CAD model will compliment the properties of the materials.

How, I dont know yet. But its going to happen.

This is an inspiration picture.

To embrace the elements, collect water, store energy, use sunlight to show the beauty of colour

ADVERT FOR COUTURE COLLECTION

Couture Textile Collection Released

Couture textile collection released

I caught up with Jono Watkins, He has been getting his new collection ready to show to the public. He states that “this is undoubtedly the best textile collection in the world” showcasing genetically engineered fabrics to the public for the first time in wellington city. He is calling for all fashion designers to enter his competition of “Wellingtons future fashion garment” his final handin for this is the 20th of June so get your ideas cracking and start thinking of ways to use his five great fabrics of the forties. He gave me a list of them and what they do...

In hydrOuterwear there will be Hydrophilic (water loving) cells amongst the hydrophobic surface to store the water. StankStop is made from Active carbon; Active carbon is a naturally occurring substance which can soak up body smells and doesn’t need washing. It is antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal.
These textiles open a whole new window of opportunity to fashion designers. Jono left us with one last quote “to design Wellington fashion for the future you must embrace textiles”.

Email to Benjamin

Ben,

For My project in the DLF programme I have taken the task of looking into what Wellingtons fashion will be like in 2040.

The essence behind my project is to embrace the elements around wellington in a garment
This is a link to the beginning of my project

CAPITAL COLLECTION 2040

From here I want to take this project further and look into the future another 30 years.

I have researched these three different technologies
- Structural Colour (found on morpho butterflies)
- Active Carbon fabric
- Hydro phobic surfaces

If It could be possible, I would like to combine these technologies to make a fabric.

A. The fabric wouldn't fade due to structural colour. And may be able to change colour or even be a display.. STRUCTURAL COLOUR DISPLAY

B. The Fabric would not need to be washed as the active carbon is antibacterial and anitfungal and has some awesome qualitites . ACTIVATED CARBON FABRIC

C. The fabric is breathable but water will not pass through it or soak in .

Say if there was 30years to develop this fabric containing these awesome qualities would it or could it be possible?

Thanks for your time Ben its very much appreciated

Cheers

Jono Watkins

BENS REPLY

Hey Jono,

Firstly, I really like your idea of combining these material properties. And yes, very very possible.

You probably already know this by interactive materials for clothes are going to be massive, for example, clothes that measure vital statisitcs such as heart rate for early diagnosis, and with electronics built in so you don't need to carry around your ipod - its woven into your clothes.

And, now they close to being able to make materials that really make you invisible! Awesome.

There are also beetle wings that are hydrophobic, but have hydrophilic channels that move the water and collect it for later.

You could also have nanofluidic channels in the weave of the clothing that mix nutrients etc or perform various functions like kidneys do, or solar cells in the clothing so that you collect energy from the sun (which means that you would need battery function in the clothing too to store the energy) and there is kinesthetic energy that could be captured and stored, so that as you move around you create energy that runs the router in your clothing etc etc.

I haven't been much of a help as it sounds like you have a well researched and possible idea. Let me know if you have more questions.

Cheers,
Benjamin

Drawball Precedent?

Check out this youtube video
It is about this website called Drawball. Drawball is this online interactive website that everybody that logs on gets a pixel and a small amount of colour and it becomes a collaborative process to generating a bigger picture - the weather could be controlled like this?

WINTER 2040 CAPITAL COLLECTION

Wellingons erratic weather is a part of this city, something we cannot escape. The winter 2040 Capital collection aims to force fashion and weather to work hand-in-hand. Collection in a literal sense, garments to complement a sensory city. Wild Wellington, howling, sodden and bitterly cold. To emphasise the elements. To celebrate sensory fashion.

Weather Vs Fashion

In 2040, the weather in wellington most likely will not improve from its unpredictable patterns of rain, wind and temperature flukes. Realistically the weather will only develop a greater extreme curve.
I will explore fashion in wellington and how the public dress themselves in wellington in response to weather patterns. This will look into outcomes to withstand temperature changes and dress styles.
Could wellington develop a garment that could tackle the problem unprediction.

Photographic diary. Dehydrated plantlife

photographs by niquita

This was Jono's plant battery research. He charged the plant with a battery which conducted and held a voltage level in the soil.
This is apart of jono's research section. I constructed a daisy chain a few months ago and have left it in the sun for two months now as it has slowly dehydrated but still remains intact. The effect of dehydration can be quite beautiful.
