Email to Benjamin

Ben,

For My project in the DLF programme I have taken the task of looking into what Wellingtons fashion will be like in 2040.

The essence behind my project is to embrace the elements around wellington in a garment
This is a link to the beginning of my project

CAPITAL COLLECTION 2040

From here I want to take this project further and look into the future another 30 years.

I have researched these three different technologies
- Structural Colour (found on morpho butterflies)
- Active Carbon fabric
- Hydro phobic surfaces

If It could be possible, I would like to combine these technologies to make a fabric.

A. The fabric wouldn't fade due to structural colour. And may be able to change colour or even be a display.. STRUCTURAL COLOUR DISPLAY

B. The Fabric would not need to be washed as the active carbon is antibacterial and anitfungal and has some awesome qualitites . ACTIVATED CARBON FABRIC

C. The fabric is breathable but water will not pass through it or soak in .

Say if there was 30years to develop this fabric containing these awesome qualities would it or could it be possible?

Thanks for your time Ben its very much appreciated

Cheers

Hey Jono,

Firstly, I really like your idea of combining these material properties. And yes, very very possible.

You probably already know this by interactive materials for clothes are going to be massive, for example, clothes that measure vital statisitcs such as heart rate for early diagnosis, and with electronics built in so you don't need to carry around your ipod - its woven into your clothes.

And, now they close to being able to make materials that really make you invisible! Awesome.

There are also beetle wings that are hydrophobic, but have hydrophilic channels that move the water and collect it for later.

You could also have nanofluidic channels in the weave of the clothing that mix nutrients etc or perform various functions like kidneys do, or solar cells in the clothing so that you collect energy from the sun (which means that you would need battery function in the clothing too to store the energy) and there is kinesthetic energy that could be captured and stored, so that as you move around you create energy that runs the router in your clothing etc etc.

I haven't been much of a help as it sounds like you have a well researched and possible idea. Let me know if you have more questions.

Cheers,
Benjamin
